Today on 7-Figure Fundraising, host Trevor Bragdon interviews Megan Rose, CEO of Better Together. Better Together provides a voluntary and preventative alternative to foster care, serves over 15,000 children and keeps 96% of them out of the foster care system. The organization’s Better Work program has helped over 16,000 job seekers in ten states. They are on a mission to keep families together and out of poverty, through the power of jobs and helping parents overcome temporary crises. Though 2020 introduced many challenges and hardships, it was their most impactful year yet.

As a previous director of a foster care agency, Megan quickly realized that many of the families in the system were actually not bad parents, they just didn’t have the resources to maintain stability. 60% of children in foster care are placed there due to neglect, and research shows that neglect is preventable. Staffed largely by passionate volunteers, Better Work offers temporary child care for parents seeking to get back on their feet. Megan recalls the past year in which the network surrounding Better Together banded together to assist in fundraising, family impact and media response. For this reason, cultivation of strong relationships within the community is so essential in establishing any organization.

Megan believes strongly in the importance of working hard and maintaining integrity in all that you do. Additionally, showing appreciation for those who are willing to support your mission goes quite a long way. It is a matter of caring for the person individually, not just what they have done for you. She then speaks of the impact the local media and journalists had in connecting the community to the mission of Better Together. While working with them, she was able to experience firsthand the power of photos and videos in telling your story. Her final advice is to remain open and receptive to feedback in order to grow and adapt.
